Kommentar Şamlı Selîm was an ʿud player and music publisher from Damascus who settled in Istanbul in the late 19th century and was active during the first decades of the 20th century. He is believed to have started publishing music in the year 1900, although his earliest publications appear to have been printed in the last years of the 19th century. He is known to have played ʿud in various ensembles at the Haci Sarafeyemin Birahane, the Ariv gazino, the Haci Sarakum gazino, and the Iskele gazino alongside well-known musicians of the time, including Kânûnî Abduh, Kemânî Şükrü, Kemânî Memduh, Kânûnî Şemsi, and Hânende Karakaş among others. He was the oldest of three brothers, known as the Ḳuḍmānī birâderleri, and his siblings Şamlı İskender and Şamlı Tevfîk were also active as musicians, luthiers, and music publishers.
