Description
Dimension:
16 x 24 cm
Extent:
71 pp.
Used materials:
Type of manuscript: Codex
Binding: Yellow binding tape. The notebook has a partial stamp on the front from the Istanbul Conservatoire Library ("KONSERVATUVARI") and several crossed-out Roman numerals ("2900" and "1617"). Next to these numbers, "356" is written and repeated again on the left side of the front. Smudges in blue, purple, and red ink appear on the covers. The back cover has faint writing in Arabic riḳ‘a script, but it is illegible. A tear becomes more prominent from the 34th page onwards on even-numbered pages.
Support: Mostly yellowed, faintly-ruled paper with 24-26 lines per page (second-line red), with some white squared pages added later.
Writing implement: Reed pen; later additions in pencil.
Ink: Multiple ink colors were used: red, purple, black, and mixtures of red and black. Multiple ink colors were used: red, purple, black, brown (oxidized black), and mixtures of red and black. Brown (oxidized black): pp. 1–2, 11–12, 15–16, p. 6 (part of col. b only). Darker (less oxidized) black: pp. 3–4. Blue: pp. 5–10, 13–14, 17–18. Red ink: pp. 1–15, 17–20, 33–34, 37–41, 43–71. Purple ink: pp. 23–28, 35–36, 42. Black ink: p. 16, pp. 29–32. Mixed red and black ink: pp. 21–22, 64. Pagination and later annotations are often in pencil or black ink.
Layout: The notebook's pages are faintly ruled with 24-26 lines per page, with second-line red markings. Some white squared pages were added later. A table of contents (‘fīḥrīṣt’ in Arabic) is present at the beginning, though one vocal composition ("Ḥicāz sirṭō Rāşid Efendi'niñ") was added later on the cover and is not included in the table of contents. Pagination starts at page 1 and ends at page 71. Between pages 11 and 12, there are two blank pages. A tear becomes more noticeable on even-numbered pages starting from page 34.
Pagination: Indo-Arabic numerals are used for pagination, beginning on p. 1 and ending on p. 71. Most page numbers are in red ink, though some pages (pp. 23-28, 35-36, 42) use purple ink, and others (pp. 29-32, p. 16) are in black ink. Occasionally, mixed red and black ink is used (pp. 21-22, p. 64). Between pp. 11 and 12, there are two blank pages.
Condition
The binding of the notebook is generally in fair condition, though it exhibits wear, particularly along the spine, which has been reinforced with yellow binding tape. A tear begins at the top of the back cover, near the middle of page 34, and progressively worsens and extends as the pages progress. The pages exhibit typical age-related yellowing (foxing). There is a faint, poem-like inscription in Arabic riḳ‘a script on the back cover, but due to its faded condition, it remains largely illegible.
Scribes / Handwriting styles
Reed pen; later additions in pencil: The main text was written using various inks, primarily red, purple, and black. The handwriting is consistent across most of the pages, suggesting a single primary scribe, though their identity remains unknown. Some assumptions indicate that the scribe could be Neyzen Râşid Efendi due to the composition of many of the pieces.
Contents
The manuscript TR-Iüne 216-14 comprises a collection of "new" [cedīd] compositions, as indicated by its title. It includes one vocal piece and twenty-five instrumental works. Of these instrumental pieces, fifteen are peşrevs, ten are saz semâîsi, and one belongs to the sirto genre. The compositions are attributed to prominent composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As noted, twenty-five of the twenty-six pieces are attributed to Neyzen Râşid Efendi. The remaining piece, titled "Muḥayyer semāʿī," is attributed to Kemençeci Nikolaki Efendi.
Headings and annotations (such as ‘ilā-āḫirihi’ [p. 69], bataḳ [p. 43], cumhūr [p. 43], tamām [p. 14, p. 54, p. 68], and ‘tamām şüd’ [p. 71]) are written in red ink. However, on p. 43, the annotation ‘[tem]me’ is written in purple ink. Various ink colors are used for division signs and round brackets indicating first and second endings. Horizontal lines appear inconsistently above headings like 'teslīm' across various pages (pp. 1–3, 3–5, 5–8, 47–49, 49–52, 53–54, 61–65, 66–71), and sometimes over hânes within the same piece (pp. 9–10, 43–46, 55–57, 57–61, 68–69).
